The handpoke technique, also called stick and poke, is inspired by traditional tattooing practices. As the name suggests, the tattoo is poked by hand, dot by dot, without the use of a tattoo machine. The basic procedures are the same, as are the tools like needles and inks. When done professionally, the handpoke tattoo is just as permanent as a machine tattoo.
While a tattoo machine allows the skin to be inked very high speed, stick and poke takes more time. Thus, the ideal pieces are small to medium in size. It is possible to tattoo large pieces, but longer sessions will be required.
Stick and poke is much more delicate; it is generally less painful than a machine tattoo. It is not uncommon to fall asleep during the tattoo. The skin is less damaged than during a machine tattoo, the healing process is then faster and easier. Inflammation, redness and swelling are also reduced.
